Piano Lessons for Children

More than just music

Music lessons are one of the finest gifts you can give your child. It also helps with schoolwork. Research by psychologist Glenn Schellenberg (University of Toronto) shows that children who take piano lessons score better on IQ tests. They perform better in school because their focus improves as well. By experiencing that through enough practice they can learn something new, it gives your child the confidence that nothing is impossible as long as they put their mind to it.

What can your child expect in a lesson?

A relaxed atmosphere with a friendly teacher. As a parent, you are welcome to sit in as well. We start the lesson by discussing homework. Was anything difficult? Then I ask them to play a bit of what they practiced. They often recognize what went well and what didn't on their own. Next, I explain some music theory and focus on good hand posture and seating posture. After that, we practice the tricky parts together.

What do I expect from you as a parent?

Mainly involvement and encouragement. Your child's piano playing improves most when they practice at home between lessons, even if it's just 15 minutes a day. This works best when tied to a routine, such as right after school or before dinner. You don't need to be able to read music yourself. Simply listening and encouraging makes a world of difference already. That support is crucial, as children need to feel safe making mistakes. Every wrong note is just a step toward the right one!

What can you expect in a lesson?

My lessons revolve around what you want to learn. It could be a soundtrack of a movie, a song by Olivia Rodrigo or Elton John, blues, jazz, improvisation, or writing your own music. For beginners, we start with the essentials: reading sheet music, playing chords, and fundamental theory. We also work on ear training. Lessons move entirely at your own pace.

What students say.

“I really enjoy the piano lessons. We always work on what I want to learn, and even though I feel I don't have natural talent, Floris is very patient as we work on technique together.”

About Me

Portrait of piano teacher Floris Boere

After graduating from Utrecht conservatory and NYU, I spent ten years performing and working as a musician in New York. I have been teaching piano for nearly twenty years, first in the US and now from my studio in Rotterdam. I've played with bands ranging from jazz and pop to yacht rock, afrobeat, and funk. I bring that broad background into lessons because my piano students play a wide range of music genres.

My core belief is simple: music should never feel like work. It isn't about reaching unrealistic far away goals, but about discovering the joy of creating the music yourself. I've watched seven-year-olds grow into confident musicians and seen adults reignite a long-lost passion. That's so inspiring. That is why I love what I do.

In addition to teaching, I am active as a pianist, composer, and producer. These skills I will gladly integrate into lessons for anyone curious about songwriting or music production.

I started my piano journey on the keyboard until I was 12, when my parents bought a piano and switched to piano lessons. Currently I offer lessons in both keyboard and piano. If you don't have a piano at home, no worries! A affordable digital keyboard is completely fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule a free trial lesson?

By sending a message via WhatsApp or filling out the contact form at the bottom of the page. I reply quickly, and we can set up a time together.

Does my child (or do I) need prior experience to start?

Not at all. Most students start as complete beginners!

How old do you have to be to start?

Children can start from age 6. For adults, there is no upper limit — it is truly never too late. My oldest piano student is 78 and enjoys it immensely!

I have a keyboard at home, not a piano — is that okay?

Absolutely. I started learning on a keyboard myself. What you learn is very similar, so a home keyboard is great to start with.

How much practice is required?

It depends on how fast you want to progress, but aiming for at least 15 minutes a day will help you master songs more quickly. The most important thing is to keep it fun. Progress comes naturally when you enjoy the process.

I don't have an instrument yet. Which keyboard should I buy?

I am happy to help you choose a suitable option within your budget. Feel free to send a message via the contact form.

Is having an instrument at home mandatory?

Yes, practicing at home is essential for learning piano. If you don't own one yet, no worries! Send me a message and I will help you find a suitable instrument within your budget.

Do you also teach music theory?

Yes! Theory is normally introduced step-by-step alongside the songs you play, but we can also focus specifically on theory lessons to prepare for music exams for example.

Can you help me prepare for a performance?

Definitely! Many students perform their pieces at school recitals or events. Having extensive stage experience, I can guide you through performance preparation.

Do you give classical music lessons?

My expertise lies in contemporary music genres — Pop, Rock, Singer-Songwriter, Blues, Jazz, Latin, and modern styles. While we can include classical pieces, if you are looking for pure classical training, I am happy to refer you to a specialized classical teacher.

Can I listen to your own music?

Yes! My music is streaming everywhere, including Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, and Tidal.
